Notes - Flew past the car. * I didn't realize at the time, but this bird is
rather special. I have been questioned on it, because perhaps I wasn't up
to identifying this bird at that time. But for a number of reasons, I
still feel confident about the id. The habitat was right. It was in
the forest along the river, not in the reeds by the river. I have always
been sure that I got it right. I have had a couple more views, but never
very good. How would I call an id like that now? I don't know.
I have gone through my life list many times and I have actually taken things out
or made sure of myself later on. If you really, really feel the need to
compete with me, and I have you by one bird, well then, for you, I'll drop the
bird. Enough of that

Notes - We actually saw it while studying in our room. It was in a tree
outside the house. This is a very special bird to me. I have now
seen them four times, this time, once in Kenya, and twice in Phinda Private
Nature Reserve. Each sighting of this really beautiful bird remains
special. This was the last bird that I saw before breaking up with my then
girlfriend. My fix was to plunge deep into birding.

Red-billed Quelea - Quelea quelea

Notes - Lots by the river in the Phragmites australis reeds. The
Red-billed Quelea are a good example of a problem species. Like most
problem species, instead of decline in numbers due to human influenced
circumstances, they find a niche to exploit and become far more numerous because
of human influence then they ever would have been naturaly. Often these
types of species reach huge numbers and the Red-billed Quelea had become a
problem with grain farmers. The solution used by many conservators was to
blow them up. At Soetdoring they were doing that with Dynamite in the
Phragmites beds.

I was cycling on my way back to Saasveld. Wilderness is by the sea and the
main road leading to George goes up a very steep section. I had just finnished
this bit, when I was feeling a little un-strong. While still pedling
slowly, the bird was right there along the road side. It was a good bird,
and therefor a good excuse to stop and have a rest.
